THEN ARRIVED IN MARECHIARO:

Starting from Marechiaro a small fishing village, the boat excursion allows you to reach the submerged park of Gaiola (marine protected area) continuing the navigation respecting the limits we find the remains of a Roman building called the Palazzo degli Spiriti, which some also call the Villa di Virgilio, claiming that the spirit of the poet was manifested from time to time and swearing that he had heard his verses declaim from a mysterious voice. In fact, Virgil really stayed at Pousilypon, in the villa built at the extreme point of Posillipo by Publius Vedio Pollione, a very rich man and close friend of the emperor Augustus, a grandiose complex, wide and articulated, whose structures spread between Marechiaro and the Cala di Trentaremi. Soon after we find the Gaiola fronted by three small islands, the largest of which is Gaiola. In front of the islet as well as the statue of San Francesco patron of the island, on the rock according to an ancient and deep-rooted tradition we find the ruins that can be seen on the nearby Gaiola beach are still known as the “Virgilio School”. Always sailing towards the extreme point of Capo Posillipo, called the horse, the tuff block opens up offering the vision of the grandiose natural amphitheater of Trentaremi, an impressive vision for the width and height of the yellow tuff walls overlooking the sea . Continuing the navigation going back up and down the hill of Posillipo from the sea a little further beyond the creek of Maisto, on the rocks of southern Italy there is a small tower where there is a mineral water source, seeing it you realize that you have arrived in one of Posillipo’s richest places in history, you can admire the Baracco villa, of pompean red color and shortly after immersed in the trees villa Rosbery, Neapolitan residence of the president of the republic.

In front of the salt stone rock signals what, for a game of currents, is a stretch of crystalline sea. Beyond the tip of Cape Posillipo we find a delightful corner of Rivafiorita, and for the teledipendents of the soop-opera “a place in the sun” a look attentive to a seventeenth-century fortress, purchased in 1884 by Raffaele Volpicelli, who turned it into a villa, preserving however , in keeping with the taste of the period, its appearance as a castle. And just a few meters away we find the magnificent cenito inlet immediately after Villa Gallotti and a series of nineteenth-century villas, including Villa Lauro, formerly Villa Pierce, Villa Emma, above Piazza Salvatore di Giacomo and church of Santa Maria di Bellavista, Villa Elisa and Villa d’Abro, villa Roccaromana and, above Piazza S. Luigi villa Pavoncelli and villa of the Prince of Angri. And then, in all its charm, you can admire Palazzo Donn’Anna built by Cosimo Fanzago for Princess Anna Carafa (wife of the Spanish viceroy). Finally returning to Marechiaro we stop to admire the famous Fenestella di Marechiaro, a poem by Salvatore di Giacomo musicated by Tosti, remembered by a plaque in a house near the cliff.

MARECHIARO: WHEN THE MOON RISES UP  : THE  MARECHIARO ‘ S

Visiting Naples means not only catching its beauty around, but also getting in touch with its hidden side, with its ‘heart’. That means that here there are a lot of places full of secrets which are worth describing to. One of these is Marechiaro, a little bay in Posillipo, famous for its ‘fenestrella’.

The romantic atmosphere you can breathe once you get in Marechiaro(especially by night, with the sound of the sea, the stars and the moon), is due also to a little window below which there is an inscription with some verses. This window in Neapolitan is known as the ‘Fenestrella’, and  it is famous for inspiring the verses of an old Neapolitan song, that have been written down into this inscription. Along the road, many restaurants and cafès where it is possible to spend your time with your partner.

Inside the archives of the classical Neapolitan songs, the Neapolitan composer Salvatore Di Giacomo still preserves the primacy, with his Marechiare: it is the story of a man who, going under the ‘Fenestrella’, calls up his love, a woman who is hidden beside it, named Carulì. The song is the experience of a man who stands in front of all the natural beauties: its evocative force gives the sensation of being just right there and it was written in 1885. Still today, on the balcony, there is a beautiful red carnation, symbol of that unconditional love, with which the composer hopefully tried to see that woman overlooking the ‘Fenestrella’.   As time went on, the little borough of Marechiaro became famous for its success among the  Hollywood stars, especially in the 60s: the ‘Fenestrella’, in fact, was the symbol of the Italian ‘dolce vita’, as well as the characteristic ‘Scoglione’, which stands upon the sea. The ‘Fenestrella’ was also shooted into a 1914 movie, entitled “A Marechiaro ‘nce sta ‘na finestra”, which gave to this fantastic overview all the success it deserves. So, if you want to know if even the fishes make love,  you simply have to go there and look at the verses written under it.
