Unfairly upstaged by Pompeii’s ancient offerings, the Ruins of Herculaneum have a wealth of archaeological finds, from ancient advertisements and stylish mosaics, to carbonised furniture and terror-struck skeletons, Smaller, less crowded, and not as ruined as its famous big sister, Herculaneum offers a closer, more intimate peek into ancient Roman life.
A once-thriving commercial port of 20,000, Pompeii grew from Greek and Etruscan roots to become an important Roman city. Then, on August 24, A.D. 79, everything changed. Vesuvius erupted and began to bury the city under 30 feet of hot volcanic ash. For the archaeologists who excavated it centuries later, this was a shake-and-bake windfall, teaching them volumes about daily Roman life.
For archaeological excavations of Oplonti we mean a series of archaeological finds belonging to the suburban Pompeian area of Oplontis, buried together with Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD: today the archaeological area is located in the center of the modern city Torre Annunziata and includes an otium villa called “di Poppea” and a rustic villa called “B or Lucius Crassius Tertius”.
The first campaigns of excavations in the oplontine area were carried out first in the eighteenth century and then during the second half of the nineteenth century, although the first systematic excavations took place in 1964 revealing the Villa di Poppea. In 1974 the Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius was found: to date, the explorations of the two structures have not yet been completed.
Since 1997 the archaeological area of Torre Annunziata, along with that of Pompeii and Herculaneum has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2016, the excavations recorded 54,403 visitors .
